Why Resolve background removal has three very different answers
Casey Faris’s tutorial starts with a simple but useful premise: there is no single “remove background” button that fits every clip. In DaVinci Resolve, the best path depends on how the footage was shot and how polished the result needs to be. That is the real takeaway from the video, and it is more useful than chasing a universal shortcut.
The direct answer is straightforward. If you shot on green screen, the 3D Keyer is the fastest route. If you did not, Magic Mask gives you a quick cutout with very little setup. If you need more control and can tolerate more work, Fusion rotoscoping can produce a cleaner matte. Faris uses the same sample footage throughout, but the point is not the subject in frame. It is how each method behaves when the clip asks something different from the editor.
That framing matters because background removal is rarely about one perfect tool. It is about deciding how much time you want to spend, how much edge quality you need, and how much motion the shot contains.
The fastest cleanup path starts with green screen
Faris treats green screen as the easiest case for a reason. Once a subject is shot against a uniform green background, Resolve has a much simpler job. In the Edit page, he opens the Effects panel, searches for the keyer, and uses the 3D Keyer on the clip. After that, the work shifts from “how do I remove this background?” to “how clean do I want the cutout to look?”
His cleanup steps are practical rather than technical for the sake of it. He recommends making sure the open effects overlay is visible so you can draw sample strokes on the green area. Those strokes tell Resolve what color to remove. Once the background disappears, the remaining challenge is usually edge cleanup: green spill, a visible fringe, or a matte that is a little too soft or too jagged.
Faris points to a few controls that make a difference. A soft behavior setting can help the edge behave better around hair. D spill helps reduce green contamination on the subject. Matte finesse gives more control over the selection itself, especially when the edge needs to be tightened without turning it into a hard, ugly outline. He also notes the tension editors run into all the time: pushing the matte tighter can improve separation, but it can also damage hair detail or create a rough look.
That tradeoff is one of the strongest parts of the tutorial. Faris does not pretend the cleanest key is automatic. He shows that a quick green screen key is often good enough for graphics-heavy edits, social clips, and other cases where the audience will not inspect every edge at 300 percent zoom. If the shot needs a photoreal finish, the workflow gets more selective and more time-consuming.
When there is no green screen, Magic Mask is the quick fallback
The second method is for the more common problem: you already shot the clip, and there is no green screen behind the subject. Faris shows Magic Mask as the easiest non-green-screen option, while making clear that it is a convenience tool rather than a perfect replacement for a real key.
He also points out an important limitation: Magic Mask is available in the Studio version of Resolve. Within Fusion, he selects the clip, opens Magic Mask, and draws over the person he wants to keep. Resolve then isolates the subject and tracks the movement through the shot. There is a “faster” preset and a “better” preset, and Faris tests both to show the practical difference.
The faster setting may be less detailed, but it can be more stable. The better setting can hold more hair detail, but he shows that it may also introduce flicker or chatter around the edge. Again, the useful lesson is not that one mode is always superior. It is that the best choice depends on the shot. If the clip is going to be used for a quick meme or a low-stakes graphic, a slightly rough edge may be fine. If the result needs to hold up under scrutiny, the chatter may be too noticeable.
Faris also demonstrates another familiar cleanup move: blur the matte a bit to soften a hard edge. That can make the cutout feel less harsh, but it can also bring back some fuzziness. His broader point is consistent throughout the video: every improvement has a cost somewhere else in the image.
The cleanest non-green-screen option is the one that takes the most work
The third method, rotoscoping in Fusion, is the one Faris presents as the most manual but potentially the most controlled. If Magic Mask does not behave well enough, and the shot was not captured on green screen, rotoscoping is the old-school answer: trace the subject, animate the shape, and keep it aligned as the clip moves.
He is honest about the workload. This is not the quick option, and it is not the easiest path for a beginner. But he also shows why editors still use it. A hand-built matte can avoid the flicker and chatter that sometimes show up with Magic Mask. It can also be tailored to different parts of the subject rather than forcing one large outline to do every job.
Faris suggests breaking the subject into separate shapes when movement requires it. Instead of drawing one giant mask around the entire person, isolate the head, torso, and arms as needed. Then use the Planar Tracker to capture motion from a region of the shot and create a Planar Transform, which helps the mask follow the movement. He demonstrates applying that motion to the subject so the cutout stays attached as the scene changes.
This section of the video is the least casual and the most revealing. Faris is not selling rotoscoping as easy. He is showing why it remains useful when the edit demands control that automatic tools cannot reliably provide. If the clip needs a cleaner edge than Magic Mask can maintain, and if the subject’s movement is complicated, Fusion gives you a path forward. It just asks for more precision and patience.
Choosing the right method for the clip you actually have
The value of Faris’s tutorial is that it turns background removal into a decision tree instead of a search for a miracle tool. If the footage already has a green screen, use the 3D Keyer and spend your effort on spill, matte finesse, and edge cleanup. If there is no green screen and you need a fast answer, try Magic Mask and see whether the result is acceptable for the job. If the shot is more demanding, or if the automatic edge is too unstable, move into Fusion and build a roto matte that follows the subject more carefully.
That sequence is useful because it matches how editors actually work. Speed matters, but so does the final use case. A background removal for a motion graphic does not need the same perfection as a composited shot that will sit in the foreground for a long time. Faris’s examples repeatedly point back to that practical judgment.
He also gives viewers a useful way to think about the process: the better the original shoot, the easier the cleanup. That is true for green screen, but it also applies to non-green-screen footage. Clear subject separation, manageable motion, and a realistic expectation about edge quality all make the job easier, no matter which tool you choose.
